About Me
My name is Dylan Brandt, I will be graduating Dec. 22' from the University of Wisconsin-Whitewater with a B.S. in environmental science with an emphasis in the geosciences, and GIS certification.
The natural world has always spoken to the very core of me. I have been fascinated with geology and paleontology since I was a very young child. At this point in my academic journey, I am ready to further developed as a serious researcher in the paleontological and geological sciences. I am currently beginning the process of applying to graduate school and aim to earn a doctoral degree in the field.
Skills that I want to grow:
-
Research design & methodologies
-
Grant & manuscript writing
-
Statistical & other analytical skills
Core research Interests:
-
Paleoenvironments & ecology
-
Stratigraphy & sedimentology
-
Biostratigraphy & geochronology
-
Biogeography & speciation

Brief Education Overview
2014 - 2019
Degree: Associate of Science
School: Madison Area Technical College
I attended general studies classes, math, science, english, and elective courses. The highlights of my experience at Madison College were courses in english, economics, logic, communications, chemistry, geology, and anthropology. Critical skills I gained include, time management (balancing work, school, and personal time), rhetorical writing/arguments/conciseness & formatting.
2019 - 2022
Degree: Bachelor's in Science
School: University of Wisconsin - Whitewater
I will be graduating in December of '22. I am enrolled in the Environmental Science "super-major" bachelor's program through the department of Geography, Geology, and Environmental Science. My area of emphasis is in the geosciences, focusing on geology and paleontology. My course work includes environmental studies, geography, geology, chemistry, statistics, anthropology, & interdisciplinary humanities. I am also pursuing Geographic Information Systems (GIS) certification, with just one course out of five remaining (expected completion in spring 2023).
Paleontology Experience
Rock Formations / Units / Ages
I have collected and conducted field work in many different Paleozoic and Mesozoic aged formations including:
-
Cambrian/Ordovician/Silurian rocks of WI & IA
-
Pocahontas Fm. (Carboniferous) of WV
-
Sundance Fm. (Jurassic) of WY
-
Morrison Fm. (Jurassic) of WY & UT
-
Walnut Fm. (Cretaceous) of TX
-
Mowry Fm. (Cretaceous) of UT
-
Cloverly Fm. (Cretaceous) of WY
-
Niobrara Fm. (Cretaceous) of KS
-
Pierre Fm. (Cretaceous) of KS, MT, & WY
-
Hell Creek Fm. (Cretaceous) of MT
Long Excursions
-
Kansas - Niobrara Fm. Smokey Hill Chalk & Pierre Shale. Weeklong trip (X3)
-
Montana - Hell Creek. Weeklong trip
-
Utah - Morrison & Mowry Fms. Week long trip
-
Texas - Walnut Fm. Weeklong trip
-
Wyoming - Morrison and Cloverly Fms. Two months + (X2)
Research:
I am currently working on four research projects, three are collaborative and one is independent.
The topics of these projects are: stratigraphic and paleoenvironmental assessment of a Morrison Fm quarry, description of microvertebrate materials from that quarry, a taphonomic study of that quarry, and a project involving Ankylosaurine taphonomy

Announcements!
GSA Connects October '22 Meeting in Denver
I am proud to announce that I will be presenting a poster on my research project at the annual GSA Connects meeting in Denver this year. Session number 273 titled, D24. Paleontology: Recent Advances in Phylogeny, Morphological Patterns, Biogeography, and Biostratigraphy. The session is on Wednesday the 12th of October 2022 at the Colorado Convention Center, Exhibit Hall F. Session begins at 2PM and I will for-sure be at my booth (#137) from 4 to 6 PM. The title of my poster is, Stratigraphy and Paleoenvironments at the Warm Springs Ranch, Foot Site Dinosaur Quarry, Thermopolis WY. If you are attending the meeting, please come say hello!
Post-GSA Connects Update 11/13/22
The meeting was a success! I met many amazing scientists and sat in on some great talks. I am now in the process of applying to grad programs and following up with potential advisors. I am sending some of my research samples out to get made into thinsections so that I can do a detailed petrographic analysis. I also will be sending some samples out to have an expert search for microfossils that may add even more depth to my paleoenvironmnetal interpretations! Stay tuned, I am hoping to have a paper submitted by the end of the summer!
